Friday 5: State Fair

Growing up I can't remember ever having gone to the State Fair. We went to lots of festivals, but they mostly involved bluegrass music and dulcimer playing. It's possible that we went, I just don't remember it.

We are lucky enough now to live very near to where our State Fair is held. In fact, the local 4-H fair is held at our county fairgrounds just a few weeks before the State Fair is held there. Neither my husband and I had been before our son was born, but now it's a favorite tradition of ours.

5 Things I Love About The State Fair

Hatching Chicks

The first day of the fair there are several incubators full of eggs that hatch over the two weeks of the fair. Sometimes we'll see a few hatched chicks the first day and head back the second week to see how many have hatched and to watch a few peck their way out.

When we went to the 4-H fair a few weeks ago, Liam expected them to be there and was totally bummed that they weren't there yet.

Ice Cream As Big As My Kid's Torso

Homemade ice cream is awesome and we love to get a cone at the fair. A small cone is stacked high enough to compete with the size of my son's torso. Yum!

Cake Competition

Liam and I both love the cake competition. It's not for eating, just for checking out the super awesome designs that people come up with. Last year our favorite was a minion that someone had made from Despicable Me. I can't wait to see what folks come up with this year.

Candy Man

The back of one of the exhibit halls has an entire room filled with mostly vintage candy that you can purchase a la carte. I always let Liam pick out 10 small "penny candies" and it's interesting to see what he picks out. It's ususally the exact opposite of what I would pick out.

Pig Races

It's hot, out in the heat of the day and so so fun. A vendor has a small horse race like track set up for pot-bellied pig races. It's about a half hour long to watch all the heats and the pigs always have fun names like Spamela Anderson, Kevin Bacon, Hamjolena Jolie, etc.

Does your town have a State Fair? Do you go? What are your favorite parts?

I used to regularly enter the photo competition in the MD State Fair before we moved to Ohio. Going to the fair was a yearly pleasure for us. The state fair here is too far from home, but we did make it to one of the county fairs today. It was funny, it didn't feel nearly as awesome as the MD State Fair, but I'm willing to bed it had exactly the same things. I suspect it's because it's the first time we've come with children so we couldn't linger over animals without worrying about them getting bitten like we used to do. I'm totally posting about it on Monday.

@Audrey : We didn't see a photo part this year. :( I think that would be a great addition to the fair. It was definitely smaller this year. Enjoy your county fair!
